FEAR: For Everything A Reason
As human beings, we are subject to all kinds of fears: arachnophobia, claustrophobia, even arachibutyrophobia--the fear of peanut butter being stuck to the roof of your mouth!
In this blog, we will discuss the fear of failure, the fear of pain, and the fear of dying and the affect they have on our lives.
FEAR OF FAILURE:
The fear of coming up short; of being perceived as less valuable, desirable, or successful after making a mistake.
As a rule of thumb, our fear of failure is what drives us to excel; deep down, we seek to fulfill the expectations of others, because they become the expectations we hold for ourselves. Our perceived self worth is often a measure of how well we think we meet those expectations.
Many girls at BYU are having a hard time making the decision about serving a mission, now that the missionary age requirement has changed, because they feel that others will think less of them if they don’t go. What can we do to change this new stigma?
FEAR OF BEING HURT:
The fear of pain; particularly valid in the case of domestic violence where individuals use violence to assert their authority.
Fear has instigated domestic violence which in turn is warping basic family structure. Individuals who grow up in these homes only know one way to maintain a sense of security--commit violent actions.
It’s a dog eat dog world out there. What can we do as BYU students to help reduce and prevent fear from causing domestic violence in Utah?

FEAR OF DYING:
The fear of the unknown; often causes unusual curiosity in morbid things.
Morbid curiosity is an eager, open-minded interest in gruesome things - disease or destruction or death - as a special invitation to think about life’s meaning. Whether we know it or not, we are all fascinated by morbid things.
Because they’re so popular, more and more morbid television shows and movies are coming out. These shows, although made modern with new actors, are basically replicas of previous ones. Why are we continually intrigued by morbidity, even when we’ve seen it before?
Fear can make us do some of the best and the worst things of which we are capable. There is a reason for every fear we have--even arachibutyrophobia! Learning about them helps us understand our own actions and the world around us. We can’t move forward or grow if we never face the fears that we have. In effect, the fears we have help shape who we are.
